Clearfield County, Clearfield (pop. 6,630) is a place with a rich history and an incredible spirit. The panoramic map drawn by T. M. Fowler in 1895 and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer captures the essence of this town perfectly. As you look at the map, you can see the present courthouse, standing just as proud and grand as it does today. Three blocks north, to the left on the map, lies the old jail next to the majestic West Branch of the Susquehanna. Clearfield’s legacy as a major logging center shines through as you envision the large rafts of logs assembled for their journeys down the Susquehanna. The historic county jail was meticulously crafted by George Thorn of Clearfield in the early 1870s, standing proudly on the lands acquired from Hon. William Bigler at the lower end of Second street. The walls, built with white and yellow sandstone, exude an air of resilience and history. At the front, facing Second street, the sheriff’s residence took its place, while the area for prisoner confinement was further back.

The main hall, measuring fourteen feet in width and approximately seventy feet in length, stands as a witness to its rugged past. Rows of cells line both sides of the hall, twelve on each side, harmoniously creating a sense of order and control. The construction cost, as agreed upon in the contract, totaled sixty-eight thousand dollars, a testament to the commitment to justice and security. Yet, the true expense extended beyond, with additional work elevating the total cost. The land itself demanded a significant investment, amounting to seven thousand dollars.

Over the years, the Jail has gone by many names, yet one constant remains – The Rock. It comes as no surprise that this new endeavor embraces its rich legacy, introducing The Rock on The River. This passionately preserved establishment encompasses a restaurant, distillery, and event space, set to unveil its splendor in the spring of 2025.
